Johns Creek gardeners are invited to sign up for a chance to plant in one of 33 four-by-eight-foot raised beds at the new community garden at Newtown Park.

The Newtown Park Community Garden, a project of the Leadership Johns Creek’s Carpe Diem team, will be located on empty space next to a future Senior Services North Fulton-run senior center.

“I think the garden will bring a sense of community spirit to this area of Johns Creek,” said Cindy Eade, a member of the team. “It will give people an opportunity to participate in an activity at the park that isn’t sports-related.”

Ms. Eade also said she hopes the garden, which received city council approval last week, will promote healthy eating and lifestyles, water conservation, composting and organic gardening.

In addition to building the city’s first community garden, the team has also established the Johns Creek Garden Association, a nonprofit organization which is looking for members.

The group has received commitments of material from two landscape companies, Home Depot, Newtown Park Community Foundation, Ciba Vision, North Fulton Master Gardeners and Whole Foods Market of Johns Creek.

To be eligible for a plot, one must join the Johns Creek Garden Association. Membership costs $10 annually, and garden plots will cost $60, but seniors 65 and older pay $25. The deadline for applications and fees is April 30.

An application form with mailing instructions can be found by clicking the garden association’s logo at

www.leadershipjohnscreek.com.

Gardeners will be selected by lottery May 1, which is about the time the beds will be constructed.

The organization is also looking for help in building the garden beds, mulching and developing educational programs. Forms and contacts are also available on the Web site.

The organization will host gardening workshops and seminars, and according to Ms. Eade, more community gardens will eventually be planted in Johns Creek.
